Alternative Informatics Association

Alternative Informatics Association is trying to produce alternative, unusual and hegemony-against ideas and solutions about not only the Internet and other information and communication technologies but also the use, the social and political effects of these technologies and the problems and consequences caused.

The Association carries out researches on both the use and social, political meaning and content of these technologies. It brings those from different disciplines together and meets technical mind with social mind. Moreover, the Association organizes panel discussions, conferences, workshops; prepares e-books, declarations, blogs, wikis, e-mail discussion lists and surveys; carries out protest demonstrations and online campaigns.

The Association makes an effort for the development of techno-social policies at macro and micro level which prioritize the rights and freedoms of the individuals and societies. In short, the Association aims “Informatics for the Humanity”.

The Aims of the Association

Our Association brings people from various jobs and groups together in order to realize the aims which are as follows:

  • To support the fact that the Internet and all other scientific, technological developments are a common accumulation of the humanity,
  • To struggle against the possible negative effects of all the bans and constraints applied on the Internet on the basic rights and freedoms guaranteed,
  • To carry out studies on the opportunities, social effects and problems of the New Media and try to raise awareness of these,
  • To examine New Media Industry and enable those from different disciplines to meet for discussions on new media space,
  • To make an effort to help a new communication culture develop against the fact that Social Medias are seen and used as only a consumption and exhibition tool,
  • To conduct researches on Digital Games, work for the development of digital game course,
  • To be against the efforts of technologies surrounding our lives fast to constrain our basic rights and freedoms and create a society of surveillance and censure; to struggle for the use of technology in a way to make people and society more free,
  • To struggle against the gaps among countries, regions, cities, city centers and neighborhoods, social classes and stratums at both global and local level in terms of access to information and communication technologies; to be against the accumulation of technological richness in particular centers,
  • To struggle for elimination of the inequality related to gender roles and patterns in terms of technology use and access,
  • To work for ensuring that the Internet is used as the most effective tool for enjoying the freedom of thought, belief and expression; to support the studies carried out by different individuals and institutions,
  • To support the right to safe communication against the surveillance and recording of any kind of communication,
  • To support the collective and copy left scientific and technological knowledge distribution,
  • To support production models and licenses based on an understanding of sharing against the patents and licenses creating domination on this common knowledge, which is not for the welfare of the society,
  • To carry out studies on intellectual rights not responding to current needs and to develop sharing models,
  • To try to prevent national and international monopolies from being established in the field of information technologies,
  • To provide the Association members with an effective communication and working environment by bringing those with different jobs and representatives of institutions that are interested in information * technologies systems under the umbrella of the Association,
  • To make the philosophy of Free Software widespread and common, to carry out studies supporting Free Software,
  • To organize national and international events such as congresses, conferences and ensure active participation in those events.

Qualifications and Experience of Alternative Informatics Association

Alternative Informatics Association gained its official status on the last day of 2010. However, it has been continuing its activities on both online and offline media for more than 2 years.

Some of our activities are as follows:


  • Establishment of the website -ozgurinternet.info- in November, 2008; access to the website without any obstacles and in an anonymous way; instant messaging and sharing similar alternative services and technical documents.
